Formula 1 racer Liam Lawson stated he narrowly avoided a potentially deadly collision during Sunday's F1 event in Mexico when two safety personnel ran across the track right in his path

The alarming incident occurred on the third lap when marshals were observed on the racing surface as Lawson was returning to the race following an early pitstop to replace his damaged front wing

Driver's Immediate Reaction

Moments later, Racing Bulls driver Lawson radioed to his pit wall engineer saying: "You've got to be joking? Did you just see that? I might have... taken their lives"

"I honestly couldn't believe what I was witnessing"

"I came out on a fresh hard compound tires, and then I arrived at Turn One and there were just two individuals dashing across the track"

"I almost collided with one of them, honestly, it was extremely hazardous"

Security Issues Highlighted

"Clearly there's been a miscommunication somehow but I've never encountered that before, and I can't recall observing that in the past. It's completely unacceptable"

"We fail to grasp how on a active circuit track officials can be permitted to just run across the track like that. I have no idea why, I'm certain we'll get some form of reasoning, but this absolutely cannot recur"

Formal Inquiry in Progress

The sport's regulatory authority, the global motorsport federation, is currently investigating the situation

"After an occurrence at turn one, track officials was informed that debris was present on the track at the apex of that corner" declared the governing body

"During the third lap, safety personnel were alerted and placed on standby to access the circuit and clear the fragments once the entire field had cleared the area"

"As soon as it became apparent that Lawson had made a pit stop, the directives to deploy marshals were rescinded and a safety warning flag was raised in that zone"

"The examination is ongoing what happened subsequent to that time"
