Marnus Labuschagne Left Out from Australian ODI Squad Versus Team India

Labuschagne finds himself omitted from the three-match ODI series versus India, with in-form Queensland teammate Matt Renshaw receiving a unexpected inclusion.

Performance Issues Result in Exclusion

Selectors dropped Labuschagne from the ODI side after being dismissed for one in both of his innings during the recent series against South Africa in August. Labuschagne has a top score of forty-seven in his previous ten ODI innings.

Labuschagne has featured in 68 ODIs and scored 1,871 runs at an batting average of 34.64, but will now continue to press his claims a return to the Test side in time for the Ashes starting in Perth on 21 November.

Surprise Inclusion and Team Updates

There have been indications of a resurgence with a score of 160 for Queensland in the domestic first-class competition this week, while Renshaw scored a century for the Bulls in the same game against Tasmania.

Renshaw could to make his first white-ball appearance in the upcoming series against India after previously being selected in an ODI squad in 2022.

Renshaw has played 14 Tests with the most recent appearance in India in 2023 but is also hoping for a return to the Test team as Australia seek a fix to their top-order woes.

Pace Returns and Fitness Updates

Left-arm quick Mitchell Starc is back for the ODI series against India after being rested since excelling for Australia in the clean sweep of West Indies in July.

Big Bash star Mitch Owen could make his ODI debut after suffering a concussion in the build-up to Australia’s last 50-over series against South Africa.

ODI captain Pat Cummins continues to be absent as he hopes to heal from a spinal issue in time to lead Australia in the first Ashes Test in November.

Squad Selection Strategy and Schedule

Australia have announced a squad for only the initial two T20 matches against India with the Ashes on the horizon, although Glenn Maxwell will miss all of the five-match series due to a wrist problem suffered in New Zealand.

Mitch Marsh will lead both the ODI and T20 teams after hitting a ton in the last match against New Zealand to secure a series clean sweep last week.

“We have named a squad for the ODI series and first two games of the T20 series as there will be rotation through the back end of the series as individuals prepare for the summer through domestic first-class matches,” selection chief George Bailey said.
“The majority of the T20 squad will remain together as it’s an crucial phase in the build towards the T20 World Cup next year, however we are aiming to find equilibrium to ensure we simultaneously get ready specific players for the Test matches ahead.”

Australia’s three-match ODI series against India commences on October 19 in Perth, before the rivals play five T20 internationals from 29 October.
