UN Lifts Restrictions on President of Syria Ahead of Presidential Visit

United Nations Security Council members approved to an American proposal to lift sanctions on Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa before his White House visit next week.

He was appointed interim leader subsequent to commanding a rebel offensive that ousted Bashar al-Assad in December 2024, concluding thirteen long years of internal conflict.

Washington's ambassador Mike Waltz at the United Nations declared the global body transmitted "a strong political signal" that acknowledged Syria entered "a fresh chapter" following Assad's ouster.

Sharaa was under UN sanctions as the leader of the religious organization the HTS movement, previously associated with the extremist organization. The US removed the organization from the catalog of international terrorist organizations in July.

Additional Sanctions Relief

Furthermore, global sanctions were ended on restrictions targeting Syria's Interior Minister Minister Anas Khattab.

The nation's top diplomat applauded the lifting of the penalties, stating online: "The nation shows its gratitude to the United States and supportive states for assisting of Syria and its people."

Forthcoming Presidential Visit

Sharaa's White House visit on Monday follows US President Donald Trump stated the Middle Eastern president achieved "significant advancement" towards bringing peace to the war-torn country.

Following their discussion, the US president stated Sharaa had "a real shot to unify the country".

The two leaders convened on their first occasion in May, during Trump's Riyadh trip during a visit to the Middle East.

After that meeting, Trump portrayed the Syrian as a "strong individual" having a "formative history".

His Islamist group HTS operated as the terrorist network's partner inside the country prior to breaking relations during 2016.

Previous US Visit

This week's diplomatic engagement does not represent Sharaa's first trip to the United States this year. In September, he became the initial Syrian president to present to the global assembly at UN headquarters for nearly six decades.

In his speech, he stated the country had been "reclaiming its rightful place within the global community" and expressed solidarity toward Gaza's residents.
